Trump Backs the Take It Down Act to Fight Deepfakes

Donald Trump speaking at an event, emphasizing the need for legislation against deepfake content

Former President Donald Trump has announced his support for the Take It Down Act, a bipartisan bill designed to combat the spread of AI-generated deepfake content, particularly nonconsensual intimate images. The legislation mandates that social media platforms establish clear and efficient processes for swiftly removing such content once a report is filed.

The bill recently passed the Senate with unanimous approval and is now awaiting a vote in the House. First Lady Melania Trump has been actively advocating for its final approval, working to ensure it becomes law.

During a congressional address, high school student Elliston Berry—who was a victim of AI-manipulated images featuring her likeness—sat beside the First Lady as one of her invited guests. Berry’s experience underscores the growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create and distribute harmful digital content.

As deepfake technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, lawmakers from both parties are recognizing the urgent need for regulatory measures to protect individuals from digital exploitation. With Trump’s endorsement, the Take It Down Act gains further momentum, bringing it one step closer to becoming law.
