ChatGPT Launches “Tasks” Feature: A New Era for Digital Assistants

ChatGPT is testing a new feature that transforms the AI chatbot into a highly capable digital secretary. The beta version of the “Tasks” tool enhances ChatGPT’s responses with integrated scheduling capabilities. This means users can set recurring reminders, alerts, and notifications with ease.

Imagine receiving a daily weather update at 7 a.m. to plan your outfit, a monthly alert to renew your library books, or even birthday reminders for colleagues that you always seem to forget.

This marks a significant evolution for ChatGPT as a proactive assistant. Not only can it manage your reminders, but it may also suggest new ones based on your conversations. For example, if you mention an upcoming trip in a chat, ChatGPT could suggest packing your passport, arranging pet care, or confirming if your Airbnb has an ocean view. Importantly, these suggestions are entirely opt-in—ensuring that the AI doesn’t overstep boundaries.

OpenAI has carefully designed the Tasks feature to remain user-friendly and unobtrusive. The scheduling power is currently managed through a dedicated “Tasks” section on the ChatGPT web interface. Notifications about completed tasks sync seamlessly across devices, whether you’re on a laptop or a smartphone.

There are some limitations: users can only maintain up to 10 active tasks at a time, and the feature is exclusive to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers during this beta phase. Free-tier users may have to wait, especially as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted at potential price adjustments for subscription plans.

Despite the exclusivity, the Tasks tool highlights ChatGPT’s shift toward becoming a predictive assistant rather than a reactive one. Its ability to anticipate user needs could redefine how AI integrates into daily life—if, of course, it performs as promised. However, not everyone is comfortable with an AI assistant nudging them, even if it’s just a reminder to floss before bed.
