Apple Strengthens AI Efforts with Leadership Shakeup and Siri Overhaul

Apple is making strategic changes to enhance its AI initiatives and improve Siri’s capabilities. Kim Vorrath, a veteran with 36 years at Apple and a key player in the launch of the Vision Pro software, has now transitioned to Apple’s artificial intelligence and machine learning division. She will serve as a senior deputy to AI chief John Giannandrea, according to Bloomberg.

Despite making waves with its Apple Intelligence announcements at WWDC last year, Apple’s AI initiatives have yet to make a significant impact compared to competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. The rollout has been gradual, with major Siri enhancements—such as the ability to interpret on-screen content and take actions—potentially delayed until iOS 18.4. Additionally, AI-driven news notification summaries will be temporarily halted in iOS 18.3 following criticisms of their accuracy.

Vorrath’s move to the AI division suggests Apple is prioritizing a more disciplined approach to AI development. Her extensive experience, including her contributions to the original iPhone software team, signals Apple’s commitment to refining its AI initiatives. It also underscores AI’s growing importance within the company, possibly even surpassing the Vision Pro in strategic significance.

According to a memo from Giannandrea, Apple’s AI division is focusing on overhauling Siri’s core infrastructure and enhancing in-house AI models throughout the year. This move aims to position Apple at the forefront of AI innovation while addressing past challenges and criticisms.
