Google Maps has gradually been incorporating Gemini AI features, and another major integration appears to be on the horizon: a pop-up option that lets users query the AI about any location they’re viewing on the map.
Although this feature isn’t active yet, Android Authority discovered its code embedded in the latest Android version of Google Maps. When users select a place on the map and summon Gemini, a new “Ask about place” button will appear above the search box.
Tapping this button will automatically include the location in a Gemini search, allowing users to inquire about various aspects—what type of place it is, how to get there, whether it’s family-friendly, its historical significance, and much more.
This update is part of a broader rollout of contextual ‘chips’ within Gemini, designed to anticipate user searches. Similar features include “Ask about screen” or “Ask about video”, depending on what content users are interacting with.
There’s no official timeline for when this AI-powered enhancement will go live, but since the code is already in place, its debut could be imminent. This is just the latest step in Google’s ongoing effort to integrate Gemini AI deeper into its suite of apps and third-party services.
Recent Gemini updates have enabled greater smart home control, on-screen content analysis, and message summarization in Google Chat. AI integrations are also expanding across Google’s ecosystem, from Photos and Music to Phone Calls and Weather, alongside third-party apps like Spotify and WhatsApp.
However, as AI continues to evolve, concerns remain over hallucinations—instances where AI generates inaccurate or misleading information. Users may want to double-check details, especially when relying on Gemini for travel recommendations, historical facts, or business details.
