YouTube has unveiled new generative AI video tools designed to enhance content creation for Shorts. The platform announced that Google’s Veo 2 video model is now integrated into its Dream Screen feature, enabling creators to generate standalone video clips in addition to virtual backgrounds.
Introduced in September 2023, Dream Screen initially allowed creators to produce images and videos based on text prompts, but only as green screen backgrounds. With the latest update, users can generate entire video clips by opening the Shorts camera, selecting the media picker, and tapping “Create.” They can then input text prompts to specify video content, choose styles, lenses, cinematic effects, and set video lengths.
The enhanced Dream Screen feature is rolling out today in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with YouTube planning further expansions soon.
This update leverages Google’s Veo 2, which, despite being in early access and available via waitlist, brings faster video generation and more realistic depictions of human movement and real-world physics. All AI-generated content will include visual labels and Google’s SynthID watermarks to ensure transparency regarding AI usage.
