Hollywood Stars Oppose OpenAI and Google’s Bid to Use Copyrighted Works for AI Training

Hollywood actors and filmmakers protest against AI training on copyrighted content.

Over 400 professionals from the entertainment industry have signed a formal letter opposing OpenAI and Google’s efforts to use copyrighted material for training AI models. Originally reported by Variety, the letter criticizes the companies for allegedly seeking special legal permissions that would allow them to exploit creative works without authorization.

The statement responds to the Trump administration’s call for public input on its forthcoming AI Action Plan. Among the high-profile figures who signed the letter are Ben Stiller, Mark Ruffalo, Cynthia Erivo, Cate Blanchett, Taika Waititi, Ayo Edebiri, Aubrey Plaza, Guillermo del Toro, Natasha Lyonne, and Paul McCartney. The signees argue that permitting AI systems to freely access copyrighted content undermines the rights and livelihoods of artists, filmmakers, and musicians.

As the debate over AI’s role in content creation intensifies, this strong opposition from Hollywood underscores the growing concerns about intellectual property rights in the age of artificial intelligence.
