Qualcomm Expands AI Capabilities with Acquisition of VinAI’s Generative AI Division

In a strategic move to bolster its position in the artificial intelligence (AI) domain, Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of the generative AI division from VinAI, a Hanoi-based AI research firm. The financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed. 🌐

VinAI, established by Hung Bui, a former DeepMind research scientist, specializes in generative AI technologies, including advanced computer vision algorithms and language models. This acquisition is a testament to Qualcomm’s dedication to investing in research and development (R&D) to lead the next generation of AI innovations. 🚀

“Integrating VinAI’s exceptional talent into our team enhances our capacity to develop state-of-the-art AI solutions that will revolutionize various sectors and improve consumer experiences,” stated Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s SVP of Engineering.

Since its inception in 2019 under the umbrella of VinGroup, a leading Vietnamese conglomerate, VinAI has concentrated on AI-driven automotive solutions and broader AI research. Its portfolio includes in-cabin monitoring, security systems, and smart parking technologies for the automotive industry and beyond. 🚗

With a workforce of approximately 200 spread across Hanoi, the U.S., and Australia, VinAI is set to play a pivotal role in enriching Qualcomm’s product lines, including chips and software for smartphones, PCs, and vehicles. Hung Bui, VinAI’s CEO, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the potential to fast-track the creation of transformative AI and machine learning solutions.

This acquisition marks Qualcomm’s second venture into the AI space this year, following its purchase of Edge Impulse, a San Jose-based AI and IoT firm, in March. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, has identified edge AI as a significant growth driver for the company, emphasizing the importance of AI technologies that operate independently of data center infrastructure. 💡
