Every few years, the tech world takes another stab at making 3D mainstream—without the glasses. 😊 From the early days of stereoscopic vision to the recent VR boom, the quest continues. Samsung’s latest attempt, the Odyssey 3D Gaming Monitor (G90XF), might just be the most compelling yet. Priced at $2,000 and set for release on April 28, it’s not cheap, but it’s fascinating.
The monitor uses a 27-inch 4K LCD panel with a 165Hz refresh rate. Not groundbreaking specs for the price, but the magic lies in its glasses-free 3D tech. It employs eye and face tracking sensors and a lenticular filter to create two slightly different images for each eye, tricking your brain into seeing 3D. The catch? This process slightly reduces perceived resolution, introducing a faint screen door effect. Not ideal, but a small trade-off for the immersion.
Games like Khazan: The First Berserker show off the monitor’s potential, with elements popping out of the screen and creating a surprisingly immersive experience. The monitor also converts standard 2D content into 3D on the fly, breathing new life into older games and anime. However, the effect is less pronounced with modern, graphically intense titles.
Is it worth the premium? For most, probably not. But as a proof of concept, it’s impressive. If Samsung can refine the tech and lower the price, glasses-free 3D could finally find its niche. With plans to expand support to 50 games by year’s end, the future looks… dimensional.
