Google Expands Smart Home Controls in Gemini App for All Users

Google Gemini app integrating smart home controls with new features

Google is introducing new features for its smart home controls within the Gemini app, making it easier for users to manage their connected devices. The Google Home extension in Gemini is expanding to offer more capabilities, allowing users to control devices such as smart lighting, thermostats, speakers, and other compatible gadgets linked to their Google account.

This extension was initially previewed in November of last year. With the latest updates, users can now interact with their smart home systems using natural language within the Gemini app. For instance, you can say something like, “It’s too bright in the living room,” and Gemini will automatically close the smart blinds. Additionally, the app now supports multiple commands at once, such as “Turn on the armchair light, but dim the kitchen lamp.”

Gemini will also provide real-time device status updates. For example, you can ask whether you’ve accidentally left your porch light on. Moreover, a new feature allows users to control “non-sensitive” devices, like lights, directly from their phone’s lock screen.

The update also includes improvements for smart speakers, displays, and TVs within the Gemini app, enabling you to adjust the volume, pause, or resume media playback. The thermostat control has been revamped to align with the updated design in the Google Home app. For security-related tasks, like managing cameras or locks, Gemini will now automatically open the Google Home app, simplifying these actions.

This expansion follows a major update to Gemini, which allows the app to perform more complex tasks across various apps. To try out the integration, simply log into Gemini with the same account used for Google Home and activate the Google Home extension. The feature is launching today, but it will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks.
